The Southeastern European Migration Observatory is an action implemented by the PATRAS SCIENCE PARK S.A., in collaboration with the Agricultural University of Athens and University of Salento. Through the website, the S.E.M.O. provides information and support for international cooperation in migration issues.
The database of the S.E.M.O. consists of archives collected by Italian and Greek Authorities and Project’s Partners, with special attention on the verification of their accuracy through the use of many different sources. It can supply valuable information to public servants, decision makers, and the wider public in a thorough, regular and reliable manner about issues related to migration in the South-Mediterranean territory and can therefore shed light to the migration phenomenon and its content in the territories involved.
Information related to the reasons each migrant is moving, nationality, sex and duration of the permission obtained, will be available at a national, prefectural and regional level for all site visitors. Moreover, the observatory is constructed so as to be able to produce results that are constantly being updated, depicting the migration status in each time period and therefore the output will eventually represent the development of the phenomenon in the areas of interest in a “constant flow”. This attribute is of great importance as most of the areas included in the S.E.M.O. have never before, so closely or separately from other areas, been observed.
Researchers, journalists, students, local, regional and national authority's officials, south Europe's citizens and visitors could use the Observatory services and participate as dialogue partners.
The provision of these information aims to the creation of a wide and participated network of people and institutions, a rich information flow as well as of a constructive and critical forum for discussing issues related to the migration phenomenon and its influence in labor markets and the regional growth.
