Sectors::tourism

Among the factors affecting regional growth for the sector of tourism are the structure of local industry, the process of EU integration, the quality of human capital and the existence of resources suitable. In tourism. Western Greece has been unsuccessful so far in becoming a permanent and dynamic attraction pole, even though it concentrates comparative advantages in terms of climate and geographic location. The reasons for this limited tourist development of all three prefectures of the Region are based on the absence of systematic maintenance and conservation of the natural advantages and cultural values, the low rates of promotion and modernisation of basic infrastructure work and the defective tourist education. Contrary to Western Greece, tourism in Ionian Islands and southeast Italy is a great resource, thanks to the magnificent coastal areas and beaches, the abundance of archaeological sites and the art centres, which have been successfully exploited. For both areas, new forms of tourism, especially alternative tourism, including wine, sports, gastronomic, winter and religious tourism should be developed.
