Sectors::agriculture

Rural development is an autonomous process and in its further unfolding agriculture plays a key role. In all the involved areas, agriculture remains an important economic activity, despite a bending that is observed during the last years. Although the geomorphology profile of the areas as well as their location allows the development of the sector, many structural weaknesses still exist. The existence of many irrigated lands especially in the Prefecture of Aitoloakarnania provides the opportunities for improved yields and implementation of more organized farming systems for the production of a variety of agricultural products. Instead, traditional products such as olive oil and citrus still determine the agricultural character of all the Prefectures. In the Prefecture of Achaia vineyards and mainly Corinthian raisins are an important agricultural product, while horticulture and especially early production is characterizing the Prefecture of Ileia. The Region of Ionian Islands has a predominant agricultural character and faces the same structural problems with most rural areas of the country. The small and divided agricultural holdings, limited water resources as well as the low fertility of some areas reduce the number of available choices. For the Italian regions of Puglia and Sicily the primary sector is still of great importance both in quality and output. Agriculture represents for their economy a sector which, despite the economic crisis of the last few years that has deeply conditioned national and international growth, continues still today to give figures for earnings and employment. This sector, for the regional economies and even more so for the local economics of internal disadvantaged areas in Sicily, represent the only sector capable of assuring wide margins of growth and development above all for activities linked to agriculture and to multifunctional role which is accorded to it.
